2017 City Con Celebrity Guests Announced

AUBURNDALE— Auburndale’s third annual City Con will have a G.I. Joe- inspired theme next year and event organizers promise more thrills of interactive entertainment to fans of comics, science fiction and horror.

City officials announced today their guests for the comic book convention scheduled for Jan. 20-21, 2017.  Celebrity guests include the following: Mary McDonald, the voice of Lady Jaye in the G.I. Joe cartoon; Larry Hama, write for the G.I. Joe Comics and consultant on G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra; and Jeremy Palko, tv actor who starred in “Burn Notice,” “Sleepy Hollow”, “The Walking Dead” and the “Vampire Diaries.”

Other guests include Dr. Paul Bearer II: TV personality and horrible movie host extraordinaire; CelestialMoon: Professional Cosplayer and Model; and Cathalina Liebel, a 16th generation circus and cosplayer performer. The event will also feature cosplay clubs including the 501st, Guardians of Justice and Task Force 27 of the Finest GI Joe Costuming Club.

For the past two years, the convention has attracted attendees across the state and vendors from around the country. Comic Book Convention officials said they are anticipating the third year to be a successful event, especially since Hama and McDonald coincide with their theme.

“I’m looking forward to our third year,” said Larry Helms, Parks and Recreation superintendent.  “This event is going to be bigger and better than our past two conventions combined.”

In addition to the panel discussions, there will also be vendors, exhibits, performances, live music, gaming, a cosplay cash prize contest and much more. G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and Suicide Squad will be shown on a movie screen during the two-day event.

Commemorative badges and bracelets will be sold as passes. The fees are $10 for Friday/Saturday. Student passes are $5. Children 5 and under are free.

The first convention was held in 2015. Past celebrity guests included Nick Arcade’s Phil Moore, DC Comic Writer Chuck Dixon and talent from the Ghost Hunters International.

AUBURNDALE—Learning how to land roles in major motion films and getting a movie distributed through HBO and Cinemax will be among the panel discussions featured at the second annual City Con.

City officials announced today their guests for the comic book convention scheduled for Jan. 22-23, 2016. Michael Jaegers, who has been featured in the “Walking Dead” and the “Hunger Games,” and John Armijo whose film credits include “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” and “GI Joe Retaliation,” will be among celebrity talent.

Other guests include Marianne Banales, the owner of Rocket Fizz in Lakeland and Tampa, who was featured on “Undercover Boss” and John Marcotte, a TED-X featured speaker and founder of Heroic Girls.

And You Films, which produced the motion picture Flashback, will make an appearance this Thursday at the Auburndale Chamber of Commerce’s Halloween Harvest. The movie was featured at the Cannes Film Festival, where it obtained a worldwide distribution, including airings on HBO and Cinemax. Flashback has screened at numerous venues, including the Daytona Beach Film Festival where it received the “Audience Choice” Award. And You Films has appeared at other Comic Book Conventions including Ancient City Con, Geekonomicon and UmiCon.

In addition to the panel discussions, there will also be vendors, exhibits, performances, live music, gaming and much more. Harrison Center for the Visual and Performing Arts are crafting a spooky performance at the Historic Baynard House.

In the spring, the City of Auburndale held a poster contest in which social media followers picked from among five posters to be the marketing campaign for the event. The Star Wars-themed poster will also be featured on the Citrus Connection buses beginning today.

Commemorative badges and bracelets will be sold as passes. The fees are as follows: $15 for Friday/Saturday and $10 for Saturday only. Student passes are $5 daily. Must have student ID. Children 5 and under are free.

The first convention was held earlier this year and including celebrity guests Phil Moore, of Nick Arcade, and talent from the Ghost Hunters International. More than 700 people were in attendance.

AUBURNDALE— City Con guest John Marcotte is grabbing national headlines in print and on major network news interviews for his Social Media campaign to empower girls to wear Halloween costumes that were #morethancute . Marcotte, who has been a TED-X featured speaker and founder of Heroic Girls, is still trending online with the hashtag campaign that gain in popularity during Halloween. Marcotte said he had a hard time finding Halloween costumes for his two daughters that were of superheroes. Marcotte said cute shouldn’t be the only Halloween costume option for girls; some of them should also include making girls feel fierce.

DC & MARVEL COMICS WRITER ADDED TO CITY CON

AUBURNDALE— Auburndale city officials announced Friday that they have secured Chuck Dixon for Auburndale City Con. Dixon is best known for his work on the Marvel character the Punisher and on the DC character Batman.

Chuck Dixon is well-known on the comic book convention circuit, including making appearances at San Diego Comic Con. In addition to his comic book work, Dixon is a best-selling author. His latest book is Helldorado: Bad Times.

“Dixon’s appearance is a huge win for us,” said Parks and Recreation Superintendent Larry Helms. “Fans  of his characters are going to be extremely excited to meet him.”
